Volunteer Magee Knitters Make Sure ‘No Head Goes Hatless’

By: Tim Betler and Jennifer C. Yates

On most Fridays at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC,  Dena Chottiner arrives with bags of yarn and other supplies and settles into a corner of the hospital’s lobby. She is joined by several local women, who surround their sitting area with yellow caution tape and a sign that says “Caution: Knitters at Work.”

Chottiner founded the group, which volunteers their time and knitting talents to make fuzzy hats for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and newborn babies who just  need a little extra warmth. The women chat away as they knit hat after hat by hand or on special round looms. View the video above for a closer look at this special group.
